Niger NIPR demands probe, sanctions over deaths of 37 suspected miners in NSCDC custody

The Niger State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while under the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna. The group has also demanded sanctions against any wrongdoing or negligence and has urged authorities to provide compensation and support to the families of the deceased.

In a statement released on Saturday, NIPR expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that it was "profoundly disturbing" and required transparency, accountability, and institutional responsibility. The group criticized the handling and communication of the incident by NSCDC officials, noting that it had fueled public anger, protests, and unrest in Minna.

NIPR emphasized that the incident has undermined public confidence in security institutions and the state-citizen relationship. The institute commended the Niger State government for taking steps to restore order and facilitate investigations, noting that authorities have announced their own plans for investigating the deaths. NIPR urged for prompt completion of the investigation, accountability, and appropriate sanctions if wrongdoing or negligence is discovered.

The group also appealed to the bereaved families, youths, community leaders, and residents to maintain calm, warning against actions that could lead to further violence or property destruction. NIPR cautioned against the spread of unsubstantiated information and inflammatory narratives, urging stakeholders to allow investigations to proceed while insisting on transparency and accountability. The organization concluded by stating that Nigerians deserve truth, justice, and peace.
