FG sets up 10-member panel to investigate Dldeaths of 37 miners in Niger

The Federal Government has established a 10-member independent committee to examine the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who perished while under the care of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State. This committee was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in response to President Bola Tinubu's demand for a thorough and open investigation into the incident.

On September 17, 2026, the 37 detainees tragically lost their lives while in NSCDC custody in Niger State. The cause of their deaths remains unknown, and the investigation will delve into the events leading up to and following their arrest. The panel will identify the deceased, scrutinize their arrests and detention, and determine the cause and circumstances of their deaths.

It aims to uncover any potential involvement, negligence, or misconduct by individuals or institutions, and propose suitable sanctions, compensation where applicable, and preventive measures. The committee, chaired by retired Deputy Director-General of the Department of State Services, Jonathan Kure, includes experts in law, medicine, journalism, and public affairs.

The Federal Government has granted the committee two weeks to complete its investigation and deliver its report to the Minister of Interior.
