Miners’ death: Niger NSCDC gets new commandant

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has appointed a new commandant, Abdulhamid Kabara, to the Niger State Command following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody. Kabara succeeds Suberu Aniviye, who was suspended after the incident occurred in Minna, the state capital, on Thursday. Abubakar Muti, the NSCDC spokesperson in Niger State, announced the appointment on Saturday.

Kabara officially took over the command on Friday, September 18. In a statement, Kabara expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and offered condolences to the families of the deceased and all those affected by the unfortunate event. The new commandant reaffirmed the corps' dedication to its duties, including arrests, investigations, enforcement, and combating illegal mining, but emphasized that safeguarding human life should always be the top priority.

Kabara stressed, "At a moment like this, beyond arrests, investigations, enforcement, and the fight against illegal mining, we must remember one fundamental truth: every human life matters."
