Niger miners’ deaths: Gov Bago makes fresh revelations

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has unveiled new information regarding the deaths of 37 suspected miners under the supervision of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). During a press conference on Friday, Bago disclosed that the victims exhibited signs of poisoning or suffocation, as evidenced by the presence of blood and foam in their mouths.

Additionally, some of the bodies showed signs of burns, prompting further investigation to determine the cause of their demise. The governor hinted at possible factors contributing to the tragedy, including overcrowding in detention cells and exposure to dangerous chemicals linked to illegal mining operations. "We just woke up to the news of the deaths; we don't know what happened.

Some of the victims were found with foam or blood in their mouths, which could indicate poisoning or suffocation. We are not sure," Bago stated. Further investigation, including the examination of samples taken from the deceased, will provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Prior to this revelation, residents of the state had staged protests in response to the incident, compelling the state government to enforce a 24-hour curfew to maintain public order.
