Najib house arrest a double-edged sword for Umno, says analyst

Former prime minister Najib Razak's house arrest, allowing him to complete his remaining six-year jail term at his Kuala Lumpur home, has become a topic of debate among political analysts. Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia suggests that while the move could provide a slight political boost to Umno, particularly in its traditional strongholds, it may also alienate swing voters and middle-class Malays.

Fauzi notes that the party's president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, would benefit temporarily from this decision as he is seen as defending Najib, a staunch supporter. However, Fauzi warns that voters not tied to any party might distance themselves from Umno due to its staunch defense of a convicted politician. Raduan Che Rose, president of the National Professors Council, echoes Fauzi's sentiments, adding that the house arrest could restore morale among Umno's traditional supporters but may not resonate as positively beyond the party's base.

The decision, announced by the Prime Minister's Department, allows Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest following a conditional pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This outcome could bolster Umno and Barisan Nasional's standing among their supporters and provide further momentum ahead of the upcoming Melaka election.

However, concerns about Najib's corruption convictions are likely to persist among other voters, potentially drawing a wedge between Umno and undecided or dissatisfied constituents.
