Miners’ deaths: NSCDC replaces suspended Niger Commandant

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has appointed a new Commandant for the Niger State Command, Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara. This comes after the previous Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, was suspended due to the death of 37 artisanal miners who were in NSCDC custody. The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar Rabiu Muti, announced Kabara's appointment on Saturday.

Muti described this as a sensitive period for the Command, as it has recently been involved in the deaths of miners arrested for suspected illegal mining activities in the state. Kabara expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and all those affected by the incident.

He emphasized that while the NSCDC remains committed to its responsibilities, including arrests, investigations, and enforcement, the sanctity of human life must always be of utmost importance. Muti stressed that in times like these, it is crucial to remember that every human life matters. He reiterated that the NSCDC's duty to protect society and enforce the law must be balanced with its responsibility to uphold the dignity, safety, and welfare of individuals in custody.
