Meta’s New AI Chip Is Coming in 2027: Arke Targets Lower AI Costs

Meta plans to introduce its own AI chip, the MTIA 450 Arke, in 2027 to reduce AI inference costs and energy consumption. The chip, designed for general-purpose inference, is expected to outperform existing hardware by around 2% to 3% in performance per dollar and watt. Meta's Arke chip will be manufactured by TSMC and designed with Broadcom's assistance.

The company has already received 12 Arke processors for testing and is committed to deploying over 1 gigawatt of the custom chips within a year. Meta's focus on inference-focused chips, rather than general-purpose processors, reflects a cost-conscious approach to scaling AI operations. The next-generation MTIA 500, code-named Astrid, is expected to arrive by the end of 2027.

Meta's Superintelligence Labs is working on optimizing the chip design based on anticipated AI workloads, ensuring the hardware aligns with the company's specific needs. While the Arke chip won't directly impact everyday user experiences, it could lower costs and energy consumption for Meta's AI services, potentially enabling the expansion of AI-powered features across its platforms.
