OpenAI's Sam Altman to brief UNSC as AI safety concerns grow

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will address the United Nations Security Council next week at the annual UN General Assembly, according to the company. The meeting is being organized by France, which is currently leading the rotating presidency of the 15-member Security Council. This comes as industry leaders have raised concerns about the need for a slowdown in AI development due to safety issues.

On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for coordinated global action to tackle AI risks, emphasizing that while national actions are vital, international coordination is equally important. The concerns have intensified in recent weeks, with employees at major AI firms resigning over the potential dangers posed by the technology.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has even called for a cautious approach, stating that we must slow the pace of AI model improvements. Sam Altman, along with tech mogul Elon Musk and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, have also expressed support for the idea of stricter regulation. Interestingly, former President Donald Trump has dismissed AI safety warnings as a "hoax" and resisted calls for more stringent oversight.
