Loneliness and exhaustion lead to higher voter abstention in Brazil

Brazil's voters are increasingly skipping elections not just due to political disillusionment, but because they are feeling exhausted and lonely, a new study reveals. Conducted by the collective Plataforma Avaaz in collaboration with pollster Datafolha, the research highlights how disconnection from community ties and nature contributes to voter abstention.

Nearly one-third of Brazil's 30 million eligible voters did not cast their ballot in the last election, driven by an "epidemic" of loneliness, mental exhaustion, and an over-reliance on technology. Experts argue that this group falls into a destructive cycle, seeking solace in TV and social media as an anesthetic for their exhaustion.

However, social media only exacerbates feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and guilt, leading these individuals to believe they cannot effect change, thereby avoiding the polls. In the study, 47% of Brazilians were classified as "disengaged," with young people aged 18 to 34 making up 44% of this group, indicating a pressing need for action.

The survey recommends implementing "good living" policies to foster connections with nature, access to culture, leisure, and more livable cities. Simple gestures like a friendly "good morning" at the bakery can boost one's happiness. Additionally, measures to curb digital addiction are essential, as these changes aim to make voters feel that their participation can genuinely impact their lives.
