Kenya wins four medals on first day of World Road Running Championships

The opening day of the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen was historic for Team South Africa, with a standout performance from Tayla Kavanagh and several national record runs. The talented Kavanagh secured a remarkable fourth place finish in the women’s 5km, achieving a personal best time of 14:51. This marked a significant improvement from her 15th place finish in the inaugural 2023 edition in Riga, Latvia, where she had previously placed 15th.

On the men’s side, Maxime Chaumeton contributed to Team SA's tally by finishing 10th in the men’s 5km race. The day commenced with double South African national record performances, with Karabo More setting a new national mark in the women’s mile (4:33.27) and France’s Agathe Guillemot claiming gold in a world-leading 4:22.74. Kavanagh expressed pride in her performance, acknowledging that while she could have done better, she appreciated the achievement.

Fellow South African runner Carina Viljoen placed 31st in the women’s mile, despite facing tough winds during the race. In the men’s mile, Tshepo Tshite made his championship debut, finishing in 10th place with a personal best time of 3:55.66, thus setting a new national benchmark. The championship will continue on Sunday with South Africa fielding strong contenders in the men’s and women’s half-marathon races.
