Indonesia extends search for dozens still missing in ferry accident

Indonesian authorities have extended their search efforts for victims of a ferry accident that occurred in the Java Sea last week, according to a rescue official. The Virgo Transport 8, which was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members, lost contact with its shipping company after departing from Surabaya on Java Island on Sunday.

Rescuers have recovered three bodies from the submerged ship, bringing the confirmed death toll to nine, with 126 others still missing, as reported by the national search and rescue agency Barsanas.

The rescue operation was decided to be extended for another seven days while discussions took place on how to right the ferry. Some remaining victims are believed to be trapped inside the ship. Yudhi Bramantyo, Basarnas operations director, stated that authorities are awaiting the results of these discussions and the steps the salvage team will take.

Divers are being sent to the shipwreck to attempt to locate the missing individuals. The rescue team hopes for favorable weather conditions tomorrow to allow the divers to carry out their activities.

Indonesia typically conducts search-and-rescue operations for seven days, but authorities can extend them based on factors such as an assessment that some victims could still be recovered. The country, a vast Southeast Asian archipelago with over 17,000 islands, heavily relies on boat connections for daily transport and tourism. Lax safety standards and unpredictable weather are often cited as primary reasons for such maritime disasters.
