Indonesia extends search for dozens still missing in ferry accident

Indonesian authorities have extended their search efforts for missing passengers from a ferry that capsized in the Java Sea last week, according to a rescue official. The Virgo Transport 8, carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members, lost contact after departing Surabaya on Java Island and headed towards Banjarmasin on Borneo. Three bodies have been recovered so far, bringing the death toll to nine, while 126 people remain unaccounted for, as reported by the national search and rescue agency Barsanas.

Rescue operations in Indonesia usually span seven days, but can be prolonged if authorities suspect victims might still be found. Yesterday, rescue officials decided to extend the search, pending discussions on how to right the capsized ferry. Some of the remaining victims are believed to be trapped inside the vessel. The rescue team plans to send divers to the shipwreck to search for the missing individuals, contingent on favorable weather conditions for the following day.
