How to make IKEA and Philips Hue smart lights play nicely together, from simple hub pairing to fun DIY hardware hacks

IKEA is gaining popularity in the smart home market, offering affordable, stylish smart lamps, and versatile smart switches in its mobile app. However, some users might want to integrate IKEA's smart lights with their existing Philips Hue setup, or include lights from other brands. Here are four methods to seamlessly connect all smart lights together:

1. Utilize the Matter standard: IKEA has recently introduced a new driver for its integrated lights, enabling compatibility with the Matter smart home standard. This allows IKEA lights to be controlled via Matter-compatible smart speakers, schedules, dimming, and more. IKEA also offers Matter-compatible lights, including the Varmblixt and Kajplats bulbs, which can coexist with Philips Hue lights. However, if you prefer to stick with Philips Hue, there's an alternative.

2. Connect via Hue Bridge: IKEA smart lights support Zigbee Light Link, the same wireless protocol used by Philips Hue bulbs. To connect IKEA lights to a Philips Hue Bridge, make sure the smart light has software version 1.2.x or later, keep it near the Hue Bridge, search for new devices in the Hue app, and perform a factory reset by toggling the main switch six times.

Although this method can create an interesting effect, it carries the risk of overheating the LEDs.

4. Opt for compatible lamps: A safer approach is to use Philips Hue bulbs with IKEA lamps designed for standard light bulbs. Choose lamps that diffuse light well, such as the Fado table lamp, Vindkast, or Simrishamn. These lamps can be controlled through the Philips Hue app, allowing for coordinated scenes and effects.
