Historically high suicide rates cause alarm in Argentina

Alarming suicide rates have sparked concern in Argentina, as death by self-inflicted means now tops the list of causes of death for young adults aged 15 to 34, according to recent data. The rate of 11.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is lower than that of neighboring Uruguay, which recorded 19.16 per 100,000. However, Argentina's numbers have surged significantly in recent years, with a 57.6% increase since 2017 and a 22.6% rise from the year before.

This data has prompted protests by bereaved family members in Buenos Aires, who argue that open discussion about suicide is essential in preventing it. Graciela Salazar, whose daughter died by suicide in 2023, emphasized that talking about the issue is crucial for prevention. Ariana Villarreal, whose brother took his life 11 years ago, highlighted the historical neglect of mental health in Argentina, citing the minimal state budget allocated to mental well-being.

The Argentine Association of Mental Health echoed these concerns, stressing that suicide is a multifaceted issue that cannot be attributed to a single cause or linear causes. They called for urgent action to address the underlying social, economic, and professional factors contributing to suicide, such as job losses, insecurity, and debt.

In response to growing concerns, the northeastern Corrientes province recently approved a resolution urging the government to take measures to prevent suicide at a bridge where several incidents have occurred. The resolution called for the installation of barriers, improved lighting, video surveillance, and emergency phones on the bridge.

Since 2023, the Angels of the Bridge organization has provided round-the-clock volunteer support at the site, resulting in the rescue of 341 lives.
