Historically high suicide rates cause alarm in Argentina

Bereaved relatives and mental health experts in Argentina are striving to spark a dialogue surrounding suicide, as the nation records an unprecedented number of deaths by self-inflicted means. According to reports from the Observatorio de Política Criminal (Criminal Policy Observatory, OPC) and the National Security Ministry, suicide has become the leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 34 in Argentina.

The suicide rate stands at 11.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a stark contrast to Uruguay's rate of 19.16 per 100,000 inhabitants. Alarmingly, recent years have witnessed a surge in suicide rates, with the OPC noting a 57.6 percent increase since 2017 and a 22.6 percent rise since the preceding year.

The recent data release spurred dozens of bereaved relatives to rally in Buenos Aires over the weekend, aiming to foster awareness about suicide. Graciela Salazar, who lost her daughter to suicide in 2023, emphasized the importance of conversations in preventing such tragedies. Similarly, Ariana Villarreal, whose brother died by suicide 11 years ago, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the multifaceted nature of suicide.

She stressed the need for a historical reckoning with mental health in Argentina, acknowledging the inadequate state budget dedicated to mental wellbeing.

The Argentine Association of Mental Health (AASM) also expressed concern over a critical public health and social situation. The organization cautioned against reducing suicide to a singular explanation or linear causal relationships, instead advocating for a comprehensive understanding of the social, economic, and professional factors contributing to the issue. AASM emphasized the urgency of addressing underlying problems and implementing immediate public policies for suicide prevention.

In a specific instance of proactive intervention, Argentina's northeastern Corrientes province recently passed a resolution urging the government to implement measures to prevent suicides near a bridge where numerous incidents have occurred. The resolution called for the installation of barriers, improved lighting and video surveillance, and the placement of emergency phones on the bridge over the Paraná River.

Since 2023, the Angels of the Bridge organization has maintained a 24-hour presence at the site, resulting in the rescue of 341 lives.
