Govt to strengthen pondok schools with AI, infrastructure upgrades, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the Malaysian government's plan to bolster pondok schools through infrastructure improvements and integration of modern subjects, such as artificial intelligence (AI). Anwar emphasized that these advancements are vital to preserve the schools' Islamic academic heritage while making them more pertinent.

Financial aid could be extended to particular pondok schools as exemplars. The enhancement of pondok schools cannot solely revolve around physical structures but also encompasses academic disciplines. During the National Turath Ulama Muzakarah 2026, Anwar highlighted the federal government's commitment to elevating pondok schools, offering better facilities and updated curricula.

Despite introducing new subjects like AI, Anwar stressed the importance of retaining traditional Islamic teachings. He clarified that incorporating AI in education does not mean disregarding the Quran and Islamic scholarship but adapting to contemporary needs. Anwar stressed the significance of AI in spreading Islam and warned of the potential dangers of unregulated AI, which could pose a threat to Muslims.

To prevent students from merely using AI as end-users, they must be trained in its applications and understand its implications.
