Famed Inter Milan and Italy forward Mazzola dies at 83

Sandro Mazzola, a legendary Italian footballer and Inter Milan icon, has passed away at the age of 83, the club announced on Saturday. Throughout his 17-year senior career, Mazzola scored an impressive 158 goals in 565 appearances, contributing to four Serie A titles and two European Cups. He was an integral part of the Italy national team that won the European Championship in 1968 and reached the World Cup final in Mexico two years later.

Known as the club's history, Mazzola joined Inter Milan as a young boy and remained loyal to the team until his retirement. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described him as one of Italy's most beloved soccer figures, stating that he brought joy and passion to generations of Italians. Born six years after his father's death in the infamous Superga air disaster, Mazzola made his senior debut for Inter at the age of 18 after a controversial replay decision.

Making his mark on the pitch, Mazzola scored Inter's only goal from a penalty in a 9-1 defeat to Juventus, helping the team win their first European Cup in 1964. He played a crucial role in securing the title the following season. After retiring as a player in 1977, Mazzola served as Inter Milan's sporting director and later took on the same role at his father's club, Torino.
