Denmark hails ‘binding’ Greenland deal with Trump

COPENHAGEN: Denmark expressed satisfaction on Saturday regarding a binding deal President Donald Trump announced with Denmark and Greenland. The agreement grants Washington permanent control over the Arctic territory's security, prohibiting Russian and Chinese bases from the region. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated the deal recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and Greenlanders' self-determination.

Trump emphasized in a statement that no adversary would ever have a base in Greenland or a military presence without explicit approval. The 80-year-old president also mentioned an "Infinite Life Agreement" with no end and promised the immediate establishment of a large military presence in Greenland. Denmark and Greenland, both hailing the deal, plan to sign it during the UN General Assembly in New York.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen welcomed the potential signing, stating next week could be pivotal for security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. However, the deal's terms remain uncertain, and Denmark emphasizes its sovereignty remains intact.
