Denmark hails 'binding' Greenland deal with Trump

Denmark has welcomed a binding agreement between the United States and Greenland, which grants Washington permanent control over the Arctic territory and bans Russian and Chinese bases from the region. US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed concerns about strategic control of Greenland, initially presented the deal as an "Infinite Life Agreement" with no end.

However, Danish officials have clarified that Denmark's sovereignty remains intact. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that the agreement respects Denmark's red lines and is significant in the context of changing security dynamics. The deal is expected to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. While Trump has not provided details about the specific bases to be built in Greenland, it is reported that the US plans to establish three new military installations in southern Greenland, in addition to the existing Pituffik base in the north.

The agreement is seen as a major win for Denmark and Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressing hope that it will be the last word in the ongoing discussions.
