Denmark’s leaders are cautiously optimistic about Trump’s announcement of a Greenland deal

Denmark's government expressed cautious optimism on Saturday about the U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a deal regarding Greenland. The island, a NATO ally, had been a subject of Trump's threats to seize it. However, the top leaders of Greenland welcomed the deal, stating it had been long overdue. President Trump claimed the agreement would provide the United States with "permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland."

Although Denmark and the U.S. already share a security agreement allowing U.S. deployment in Greenland, it remains unclear how the new deal differs. The deal is expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly next week, pending parliamentary approval in Denmark and Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed optimism, hoping the deal would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while respecting Denmark's limits.

Greenland's leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen praised the deal, stating it benefited both collective security and the country's development. Greenland's Foreign Minister Múte B. Egede expressed satisfaction with the progress. Trump said the U.S. would begin developing a larger military presence on the mineral-rich island immediately.

While few details about the deal were known, a U.S. State Department official stated it would ban non-NATO bases, limit adversary investments in Greenland, and prevent China and Russia from establishing a base on the island.
