Carrick has faith in VAR despite derby error

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick maintains his trust in the video assistant referee (VAR), despite an egregious error that cost the team a crucial derby win. Within three hours of Manchester City's 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, the referee's body Pro Ref issued a formal apology to United. Neither VAR Matt Donohue nor his assistant Blake Antrobus have been utilized for this weekend's matches following their failure to identify City midfielder Enzo Fernandez's offside position before Erling Haaland's decisive goal.

Carrick was furious following the game, deeming it a "worrying" interpretation of the rules. Before his team's Premier League trip to Fulham, he was asked about his faith in VAR. "One-off things can happen," he stated. "At the time it was a pretty big one, we know that. I don't think I need to go over that. But yes, I've got faith in it.

It's the system we work towards and that we use." Referee's chief Howard Webb has faced criticism for officiating standards. Webb expressed disappointment over the outcome, stating that officials had been overly focused on a potential offside against Haaland and neglected Fernandez's positioning. Webb has spoken to United to improve accountability.

The apology holds little meaning, according to Carrick, who appreciates their admission of error. The manager has backed central defender Leny Yoro, despite his poor performance in United's 3-2 Carabao Cup loss to Brighton. Yoro, linked with major clubs upon joining United for £52.2m from Lille, has made 55 Premier League appearances, mostly as a substitute. Carrick emphasized that he has no concerns for the 20-year-old, who has a promising future ahead.
