Benue strengthens surveillance to contain diphtheria

The Benue State Government has assured residents of measures to contain diphtheria, according to Dr Paul Ogwuche, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services. Despite no recorded cases in the state, the movement of people to neighboring Nasarawa State has prompted increased preparedness. The ministry has strengthened surveillance and activated its epidemiological and public health emergency unit to respond to any affected individuals with the infectious disease. The immunization coverage in the state's 23 local government areas has been enhanced.

Diphtheria, described by the commissioner as a serious contagious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is an upper respiratory infection affecting the nose and throat. It spreads through coughing and sneezing in crowded environments. The commissioner urged parents to ensure their children receive routine immunizations and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever or difficulty swallowing occur.
