Expert urges support, not punishment, for suicidal people

Psychotherapist Dr Favour Alexander has urged the government to provide clinical and non-judgmental support for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts instead of criminalizing them. The expert argued that suicidal thoughts should be treated as a mental health issue requiring professional intervention rather than punishment. Alexander emphasized the importance of looking beyond the outward behavior of those experiencing suicidal thoughts and addressing the underlying issues affecting them.

"The question is, what is going on in their brains?" she said, stressing that criminalizing people with suicidal thoughts would not address the root causes of their condition. Alexander questioned whether taking one's life would resolve the problems that might have led to suicidal thoughts, asserting that it would not solve the underlying issues.

She stressed the need for government intervention to make professional support available to those experiencing suicidal thoughts and other mental health challenges. "They need clinical support. They need support, non-judgmental support," Alexander said. The psychotherapist also noted that individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts may not always exhibit obvious signs of distress, pointing out that even seemingly successful and well-adjusted people could be struggling internally.

Alexander reiterated that criminalizing people with suicidal thoughts would not resolve the underlying problems and called for professional intervention instead.
