Benue strengthens surveillance to contain diphtheria

The Benue State Government has assured residents that measures are being taken to contain diphtheria, a contagious bacterial infection. Dr Paul Ogwuche, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, made this assurance during a recent interview with journalists. Despite the state not yet recording any cases, the commissioner explained that the need to prepare for the disease arose due to the movement of people to other states, particularly Nasarawa State.

The ministry has intensified surveillance and readiness in anticipation of potential diphtheria cases, as occurrences are on the rise nationwide. The epidemiological and public health emergency unit within the ministry has been activated to respond swiftly to anyone affected by the infection. The commissioner further disclosed that immunization coverage in the 23 local government areas of the state has been bolstered.

Diphtheria, described by the commissioner as a serious upper respiratory infection affecting the nose and throat, is transmitted through coughing and sneezing in densely populated areas. Outbreaks of this disease are typically more prevalent in regions with lower vaccination coverage. The commissioner emphasized the importance of routine immunization for children and prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever or difficulty in swallowing are observed.
