Burglary hits moving BNSF train as container catches fire in Riverside

A BNSF train carrying mixed freight experienced a fire during a burglary incident in Riverside, California, on Thursday morning. The train was en route from Los Angeles to Chicago, according to the railroad company. Firefighters discovered an upper container on the double-stack train that was ablaze while the train was moving. The Riverside dispatch office received the initial report at 4:40 a.m. near Chicago Avenue. The train was initially moving west from downtown Riverside before it was redirected to travel east between Spruce and Columbia streets. The Riverside Fire Department sent 19 firefighters, four engines, one truck, and a chief officer to the scene.

Initial access issues prevented the crew from reaching the flames at their initial location. Railroad personnel were then directed to reposition the train to a more accessible area. Once the crew gained access, they managed to extinguish the fire, officially closing the incident as RIV #26-34784. The Riverside Fire Department also collaborated with the Colton Fire Department in responding to the incident.

After the fire was extinguished, the railcar was returned to a BNSF representative and company police. Railroad investigators took charge of the investigation, which involves the removal and examination of the railcar. So far, there have been no reports of casualties, injuries, evacuations, or displaced residents. The BNSF Police now lead the investigation into the burglary and fire.
