Niger miners’ deaths: Tinubu orders probe, vows to prosecute offenders

President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. This announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. Tinubu emphasized that the life of every Nigerian is precious, and no citizen should lose their life due to negligence, abuse, or inhumane treatment while in government custody.

The unrest following the incident led to a curfew declaration in Niger State. Tinubu expressed deep concern over the tragic deaths, stating that enforcement operations must be conducted within the law and with respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of every person in custody. He vowed that those found guilty of contributing to the deaths would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

The President directed relevant authorities to ensure a thorough, transparent investigation, covering the circumstances of the arrests, detainees' conditions, detention conditions, medical attention provided, and the events leading to their deaths.
