EXCLUSIVE: Over 30 Suspected Illegal Miners Beaten To Death In NSCDC Custody In Niger, Witnesses Claim

Global Rights, a non-profit organisation, has expressed deep concern over the violent response of security forces to protests in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. The group's recent statement, posted on their official channels, criticizes the use of live ammunition by authorities to disperse demonstrators. This comes in the wake of the deaths of 37 illegal miners at a detention facility run by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which sparked widespread unrest in the region.

In their statement, Global Rights emphasized that security personnel bear the responsibility to maintain order, but this duty must be carried out in accordance with the law, proportionality, and respect for human rights, including the right to life and the right to peaceful assembly. The rights group urged authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the reported use of live ammunition, to hold accountable those responsible for any violations, and to ensure that grieving families and protesters can seek justice without fear of intimidation or retaliation.

Additionally, the government of Niger State has declared a 24-hour curfew to try to quell the escalating tensions. The situation in Minna remains tense as the community grapples with the tragic loss of life and the subsequent confrontations between protesters and security forces.
