Najib gets conditional pardon, to serve remainder of sentence under house arrest

Putrajaya, September 18 - Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been granted a conditional royal pardon, enabling him to complete his prison sentence under house arrest, according to the Legal Affairs Division. This decision was made during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, which took place this morning.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, has approved the conditional pardon, which will see Najib serve the remainder of his sentence from August 23, 2028, under house arrest, provided he meets certain financial obligations. The statement revealed that Najib must pay a fine of RM50 million to remain under the terms of the pardon.

The secretariat emphasized that Najib must adhere to all statutory conditions associated with the royal pardon. Any breach of these terms will result in the immediate revocation of the conditional pardon, forcing him to return to prison to serve the rest of his sentence.

Najib was convicted in 2020 for his involvement in the SRC International corruption case, which is part of the broader 1MDB scandal. He started serving his initial 12-year prison sentence at Kajang Prison in August 2022, following the Federal Court's rejection of his final appeal. His sentence was later reduced to six years, with the original RM210 million fine now capped at RM50 million, following a prior review by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in early 2024.
