Minority demands full breakdown of GH¢58.9m spent on Ghana’s World Cup participation

The Minority in Ghana's Parliament is calling for a full and detailed accounting of the GH¢58.9 million spent on the country's involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This comes after the government disclosed the expenditure related to the tournament. In addition, the Minority is seeking clarification on the funds raised through a fundraising campaign, reportedly totaling GH¢115 million, to support the Black Stars in their participation.

Ranking Member of the Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, emphasized the need for a comprehensive reconciliation of all funds mobilized for the national team. He requested that the breakdown include details such as the amounts received, the dates of payments, the accounts into which the funds were deposited, the entities that received them, how the money was spent, and any remaining balance after the tournament.

Assafuah emphasized that these contributions cannot be allowed to vanish into a general pool without any accountability. He argued that those who supported the national team financially, both private individuals and corporate organizations, have a legitimate right to know how their resources were utilized. This demand follows a previous disclosure by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, regarding the government's expenditure for Ghana's participation in the 2026 World Cup.
