Mahama unveils plans for textile factory at reclaimed Agbogbloshie site

President John Dramani Mahama unveiled plans on September 18, 2026 to transform the reclaimed Agbogbloshie landfill site in Accra into an industrial hub. The initiative includes the construction of a textile factory aimed at generating employment opportunities for the youth. This redevelopment is part of a larger government strategy to repurpose reclaimed landfill sites across Ghana, transforming them into productive economic spaces instead of leaving them unused post-waste removal.

During his speech on Friday, September 18, 2026, Mahama commissioned the waste evacuation from Agbogbloshie under the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise. He emphasized that these reclaimed sites have the potential to offer industrial development and job opportunities, particularly for Ghana's rapidly growing youth population.

The proposed textile factory in Agbogbloshie is set to be a key component of the planned industrial redevelopment of the site. The waste evacuation exercise, scheduled to last 90 days, will see the removal of around one million tonnes of waste from Agbogbloshie, which will then be disposed of at the Adepa Waste Centre in Nsawam.
