M-Pesa fraud: Police in Garissa arrest one person of interest posing as Safaricom agent

Garissa police have apprehended an individual suspected of involvement in an M-Pesa fraud case, officials reported on Friday, September 18, 2026. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that the arrest took place in the Posta area of Bulla Hodhan, following an incident wherein an M-Pesa shop attendant was duped by someone posing as a Safaricom agent.

According to the DCI, the fraudulent actor approached the attendant, claiming to offer a mobile line upgrade. Utilizing deception, the suspect swapped the attendant's mobile line and subsequently transferred funds to a different account using it. Following the unauthorized transfer, the attendant reported the incident to the police.

Garissa Police Station swiftly arrested the suspect, who was subsequently taken into custody. During the search, police recovered several SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM card registration devices, and four chargers. The recovered items will assist ongoing investigations into the alleged fraud. The DCI emphasized the public's responsibility to report incidents of fraud and suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies, while warning the public to be cautious when interacting with individuals claiming to be telecommunications agents, especially those requesting access to mobile lines.
