Extra patrols at London St Pancras station after crime gang arrested

The British Transport Police (BTP) are increasing security patrols at London St Pancras station due to a series of crimes by an Algerian gang targeting wealthy passengers and stealing their luggage. The gang, consisting of Abdel Aitkebir, 35, and Medhi Fatih, 41, were arrested after stealing suitcases containing items worth over £600,000 from a taxi rank.

Their accomplice, Faysal Benoumechiara, 27, was also involved in similar thefts. The gang often lurks around Eurostar platforms, targeting individuals with expensive-looking designer bags. In response, plainclothes officers will patrol Eurostar platforms to intercept the suspects as they attempt to steal. The station will also announce warnings every 10 minutes about bag thieves operating in the area.

Private chauffeurs are being trained to be more vigilant with luggage. The increased security follows a wealthy family's theft of luggage worth more than £600,000, including jewellery. The gang's activities were traced through CCTV footage showing them scouting the station before the theft. BTP Superintendent Nick Sedgemore emphasized the seriousness and inconvenience of luggage theft, stating they are working to crack down on such offenses.

The London St Pancras Highspeed train company has also increased security patrols around the station. Bilal Arbaoui, 32, was recently jailed for stealing a gold suitcase containing £175,000 worth of items outside St Pancras.
