England can build on World Cup 'spirit', says Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel, England's manager, believes the nation can build on the impressive spirit demonstrated during their World Cup campaign as they aim for victory at Euro 2028. Speaking at Wembley, Tuchel announced a 27-man squad for a four-game Nations League camp, starting with a match against world champions Spain on September 26. The announcement comes nine weeks after England's painful semi-final defeat by Argentina in the World Cup.

The squad includes controversial selections such as Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, who were overlooked for the World Cup. Other notable picks include Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. Several players from the World Cup squad, including John Stones, Djed Spence, Dan Burn, Jordan Henderson, and Dean Henderson, were injured and missed out on selection.

Tuchel emphasized that the Nations League should not be seen as a new beginning, but rather an opportunity to build upon the valuable foundation they established during the World Cup. He stated that the target is to win the home Euros, which will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The German expressed his disappointment with England's performance at the World Cup but remained committed to his squad choices.

Tuchel praised Palmer's recent form, stating that he has regained his confidence and is contributing with assists and goals. The same applies to Alexander-Arnold, who has been impressive for Chelsea. Tuchel also confirmed his intention to play Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who failed to appear at the World Cup. He sees this as an opportunity for Mainoo to showcase his abilities and emerge as his best self.

The manager expressed his determination to close the gap on Spain and prove their mettle in the upcoming Euro 2028 match at Wembley. The stadium is fully sold out, and Tuchel believes the motivation for the team is at its highest level, eager to face the world champions. England will also play the Czech Republic twice and Croatia once during the upcoming international window.
