Gattuso explains why Lazio won’t sign Icardi as a free agent

Gennaro Gattuso, Lazio's head coach, has explained why the Italian club will not sign Mauro Icardi as a free agent despite the transfer window remaining open. Icardi, 33, is still eligible to join any club as a free agent as his contract with Galatasaray expired in June 2026. Despite talks between Icardi's entourage and Lazio earlier this summer, and renewed negotiations last week, Gattuso has decided against signing the former Inter and Sampdoria star.

Gattuso emphasized that Lazio made their choices, signing Pinamonti and Gudmundsson, and can't go back on their commitments. The coach also pointed out that Lazio already has six full-backs, and with Marusi returning, the team would have to leave out two others, which the coach considers unfavorable. Lazio currently sits with three wins and one draw in four Serie A games this season, facing struggling Venezia at the Stadio Penzo on Saturday, September 19.
