Akwa Ibom: Two rescued in speedboat mishap along Ibaka waterways

On Thursday, 17th September, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a mishap occurred along the Ibaka waterways in the Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. A blue W23 speedboat, registered as "LET’S PRAY" and propelled by a Yamaha outboard engine, was transporting goods from Oron towards Cameroon when the accident took place.

DSP Timfon John, the Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State police command, disclosed the incident in a statement on Friday. According to his account, the boat's driver, Mr. Daniel, was attempting to drain accumulated water from the vessel when he adjusted the seacock. However, waves generated by a passing boat destabilised the speedboat, leading to water ingress and eventual sinking.

John noted that the boat's driver, Mr. Daniel, and his conductor, Mr. Kani, were promptly rescued by the Marine Police Operational and Surveillance Patrol Team, which was on patrol at the time. The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the Marine Police personnel for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response. He urged boat operators and passengers to prioritize safety, ensure vessels are seaworthy, and avoid overloading while navigating busy waterways.
