Abim kecam teater didakwa perlekeh Rukun Negara, gesa mohon maaf

Yesterday, a video clip surfaced related to a theatrical performance accused of demeaning Malaysia's Rukun Negara, sparking widespread negative public reaction. In Kuala Lumpur, the Islamic Youth Association of Malaysia (Abim) urged the organizers and participants of the theatrical performance, which was accused of demeaning Rukun Negara, to provide explanations and publicly apologize.

Abim President Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin stated that the theatrical performance should not be perceived as a bold act, but rather as a reflection of moral deficiencies that could undermine the foundation of communal living among Malaysian citizens. He emphasized that Rukun Negara is not a mere slogan or a comedy prop, but a national covenant forged from the nation's collective experience to preserve unity, solidarity, rule of law, and decency in a diverse society.

Abim President Ahmad Fahmi reaffirmed that Abim always respects artistic freedom, but artistic freedom does not mean being exempt from responsibility. The distinction lies between criticizing our failure to uphold Rukun Negara and using Rukun Negara itself as a tool for defamation. Organizers and participants must openly provide explanations, apologize, and assume responsibility for their actions.

The authorities should thoroughly investigate this matter, fairly and in accordance with the law. Ahmad Fahmi noted that during times of polarization and erosion of trust among the public, the performing arts should elevate thinking and instill human values, rather than undermining the fundamental unity that unites the Malaysian people.
