Sweden’s PM Kristersson resigns after left-wing wins slim majority in election

Conservative Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation on Thursday following the left-wing opposition's victory in the country's general election. The left-wing coalition, led by Social Democrats, secured a three-seat majority in the 349-seat parliament over Kristersson's right-wing alliance, which includes the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats. The decisive victory for the left-wing bloc was demonstrated by a vote margin of approximately 50,000 votes out of Sweden's 10.6 million inhabitants.

Social Democrats' Magdalena Andersson expressed her intent to form a new government, emphasizing the Swedish people's desire for unity and progress. As the negotiations for a potential government coalition could potentially stretch over several weeks, Kristersson's political career may once again be put on hold. The task of uniting the various left-wing parties, including the Socialist Left Party and Centre Party, proved to be a significant challenge, given the ideological differences among them.

Andersson's predecessor, Pedro Sanchez of Spain, praised Sweden's decision to support social democracy and its focus on social justice and the green agenda. The newly elected parliament will convene on September 29 to vote for a new prime minister. Kristersson indicated his respect for Andersson's efforts and willingness to explore possibilities to secure a majority from non-socialist parties.
