Semicon India 2026: India’s semiconductor ecosystem expanding, opening new opportunities, says Modi

On September 17, 2026, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promoted India as a prime location for global chip manufacturing during the opening of Semicon India 2026. He highlighted the rapid expansion of the semiconductor ecosystem, which offers new opportunities for innovation, investment, and growth. Modi emphasized that India is actively working towards becoming a trusted destination for chip manufacturing, citing the approval of 12 chip-making projects so far, with plans to increase this number in the upcoming phase.

The Indian government, through the Indian Semiconductor Mission 2.0, has increased its outlay to $13.5 billion from $8 billion in the first phase, with a focus on providing all necessary policies and regulatory frameworks to facilitate manufacturers' success. Modi pointed to strong economic growth, including the Q1 GDP growth rate and an upgrade in India's rating by Japanese agency JCRA, indicating growing global confidence in the country.

India aims to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem that extends beyond chip design and assembly to fabrication, advanced packaging, equipment, materials, research, and talent. The country seeks to reduce its dependence on global supply chains by betting on the global trend of diversifying semiconductor manufacturing. To support this vision, India is attracting global manufacturers with billions in incentives, leveraging its engineering talent, vast consumer market, and strategic position.

Applied Materials announced a $5 billion investment under Vision 2035, demonstrating the commitment to integrating India's semiconductor ecosystem into the global value chain.
