Russian drone attack on Tanzania-flagged vessel kills captain, injures 3 crew members, Ukraine says

A Russian drone strike on September 17 targeted a Tanzania-flagged civilian vessel in the Black Sea, resulting in the death of the ship's captain and injuries to three crew members. The Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine reported the incident, though they did not disclose the specific Ukrainian port the vessel was en route to. The ministry's statement highlighted Russia's repeated targeting of Ukrainian ports, port infrastructure, and civilian commercial vessels in the Black Sea, which they warned could jeopardize international shipping and logistics routes.

They called for a coordinated international response and measures to bolster the protection of civilian shipping in the region. The surge in attacks by both Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea intensified throughout the spring and summer, with Ukraine launching Operation Molochka in July to pressure Russia's naval presence in the area.

Turkey urged Moscow and Kyiv to halt attacks on vessels in August, following a string of strikes involving Turkish-flagged ships, though Kyiv remained unswayed by the proposal. In response to Russia's ongoing aggression, Ukraine established its own Black Sea maritime corridor in August 2023, following Russia's withdrawal from a U.N.- and Turkey-backed grain deal. Since then, Russia has continued its targeting of ports and civilian shipping in the region.
