RM1mil heist: Goldsmith robbed twice in two years [WATCH]

Last night, four masked men armed with hammers and sharp weapons carried out a jewelry heist at a goldsmith shop in a shopping center in Sungai Petani. The assault unfolded at approximately 7:20 PM. Two suspects broke three display cases and stole various pieces of jewelry. Their accomplices waited about 20 meters away from the shop before joining the fray.

The police received reports of the incident shortly after it occurred. Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan stated that the actual losses are still under investigation, with the initial estimate ranging between RM700,000 and RM1 million from the shop owner. There were two employees present during the robbery, but neither sustained injuries.

Members of the public came to the aid of the shop owner, retrieving several pieces of jewelry that had been dropped or left behind by the suspects. These items were later handed over to the police. Hanyan warned the public against attempting to confront the criminals, particularly if they are armed, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing public safety.

The police are probing the case under Section 395 and Section 397 of the Penal Code, which pertain to gang robbery and armed robbery, respectively. The registration numbers of the two motorcycles involved in the crime are still under investigation. Under the law, offenders could face up to 20 years in prison and whipping if found guilty.

This is not the first time the shop has been targeted; it was robbed in 2024 as well, with losses estimated at around RM1 million.
