Police arrest 36 suspects over lynching of officer at Gindabour

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended 36 individuals suspected of involvement in the lynching of a police officer at Gindabour in the Savannah Region. The deceased officer, identified as General Constable Redeemer Owusu, met his end on September 16, 2026, while on duty along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road. According to preliminary investigations, a motorbike rider viewing the patrol team from afar suddenly veered into the foliage, prompting suspicion among the officers.

They followed the rider, leading to his discovery unconscious along a bush road. The officers transported the man to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. Upon hearing of the rider's demise, a mob from the community allegedly launched an attack on the police officers, resulting in Owusu's death and injuries to his colleagues.

The police vehicle also sustained damage during the incident. Both victims' bodies have been taken to the Damongo Morgue for further examination. The Inspector-General of Police has dispatched investigators and intelligence officers to facilitate the ongoing probe and ensure justice is served. Reinforcements from several districts have been deployed to bolster security and maintain order.

All 36 suspects are presently in custody and will face court proceedings. The Police firmly condemn the assault on their officers and pledge to see the perpetrators held accountable through due process.
