Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman make MLB history with rare feat in Cubs' rout over Braves

On Wednesday night, Michael Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman of the Chicago Cubs achieved a rare feat in Major League Baseball history. The pair became the first teammates to accomplish the feat of hitting a home run, a triple, and three extra-base hits in the same game, nearly 70 years after the last occurrence. The last time this happened was in 1958 when Willie Mays and Daryl Spencer of the San Francisco Giants achieved the same feat, according to OptaStats.

Bregman came close to hitting for the cycle, the rare accomplishment of hitting a home run, a triple, a double, and an RBI in one game. However, he fell short with an RBI double in the first inning followed by a solo home run in the fourth. His highlight of the game was a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning that narrowly cleared the Braves third baseman, Austin Riley, to put the Cubs up 6-0.

Crow-Armstrong kicked off the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning, followed by another solo shot in the seventh. He also hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning, just two batters ahead of Bregman. Despite the Braves adding two runs in the ninth inning, the Cubs managed to secure an 8-4 victory, demonstrating their dominance on the field.

The win solidified the Cubs' solid performance, currently sitting at 85-68. The team has now won four of their last six games and maintains an 85-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central. While the Milwaukee Brewers have already clinched the NL Central, the Cubs still have a two-game lead in the NL wild-card race. The Braves, meanwhile, drop to 89-64 and hold the lead in the NL East, but a win on Wednesday night, combined with help from other teams, could have secured a postseason berth for them.

Both teams still need more victories to secure a postseason spot, but the Cubs, thanks to Bregman and Crow-Armstrong, appear well on their way.
