Olympic organisers okay crocodile river for canoeing event

Olympic organizers have given the green light for a segment of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, to host canoeing events during the 2032 Brisbane Games, despite the river being inhabited by approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles. An independent technical evaluation determined the course to be suitable for both Olympic and Paralympic competitions.

The assessment analyzed weather conditions, water levels, and flood risks, rather than focusing on the presence of the crocodiles. The location is already utilized for training and competitions. Both World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have endorsed the site, asserting that it can deliver fair conditions for athletes. Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris stated that this approval offers greater certainty for planning and reaffirmed Rockhampton as the focal point for flatwater events.

He had previously dismissed crocodile concerns, likening them to the risks posed by sharks in the ocean. "Based on the extensive analysis undertaken, we now know that the Fitzroy River is capable of providing fair competition conditions during the period of the Games, consistent with the requirements of Olympic and Paralympic Rowing," World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland noted.

Paddle Worldwide President Thomas Konietzko added, "The quality and depth of the technical work undertaken has significantly improved our understanding of the field of play and provides confidence to us and our athletes that the course can deliver fair competition for Canoe Sprint athletes." In response to the crocodile issue last year, Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris remarked, "There are sharks in the ocean and we're still surfing... it's a can do, not a can't do - please change the mindset here."

On Thursday, he commented on the venue securing approval, saying, "The endorsement provides additional certainty as we move into the next phase of venue planning and Games delivery, ensuring all future design and operational work continues to focus solely on Rockhampton." Saltwater crocodiles, known locally as Salties, inhabit both freshwater and saltwater and can reach lengths exceeding six meters.
