Olympic organisers okay crocodile river for canoeing event

The Olympic organising committee has given the green light for a portion of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, to host canoeing events during the 2032 Brisbane Games, despite the river being inhabited by approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles. An independent technical review concluded that the course meets the standards for Olympic and Paralympic competition, focusing on weather conditions, water levels, and flood risks rather than the crocodile presence.

The site is already utilized for training and competitions and has received endorsements from World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide, which stated the location can provide equitable conditions for athletes. Brisbane 2032 president Andrew Liveris expressed confidence, noting that the approval provides greater certainty for planning and confirmed Rockhampton as the chosen location for the flatwater events.

He previously dismissed crocodile concerns, likening them to the safety risks of ocean sharks. World Rowing president Jean-Christophe Rolland emphasized that the comprehensive technical assessment has significantly improved understanding of the competition conditions, ensuring fair competition for Canoe Sprint athletes. Brisbane 2032 president Liveris downplayed the crocodile issue, stating that the endorsement provides additional certainty for future planning, keeping all subsequent design and operational work focused on Rockhampton.
