Matthew Lillard Says He’s “Embarrassed” About Returning for ‘Scream 7’ After Melissa Barrera’s Firing

Matthew Lillard, known for his role as Stu Macher in the original Scream film and as the villainous Ghostface, has expressed regret for his decision to reprise his role in Scream 7. At a Q&A event for the film's 30th anniversary, Lillard admitted to being "embarrassed" about his choice to return to the franchise earlier this year.

The reason behind his decision comes to light when he mentions the firing of actress Melissa Barrera from Scream 6. Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in both Scream (2022) and Scream VI, was dismissed in 2023 for her pro-Palestinian statements following the conflict in Israel. The producers of the franchise, Spyglass Media Group, accused Barrera of "antisemitism" for expressing her disapproval of the actions of the Israeli government, which have resulted in an estimated 73,000 deaths and have been deemed a genocide by a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry.

Lillard, who is a supporter of queer and trans rights, as well as an advocate against ICE, acknowledged his embarrassment for agreeing to return to the series, stating that he failed to consider Barrera's situation and the ramifications of his decision. Despite his queer children and his stance against social injustices, Lillard is currently starring in Mike Flanagan's upcoming Carrie television adaptation, set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 7.
