Shawn Horcoff Draws Line in Sand on Red Wings’ Future

Shawn Horcoff has made it clear that he does not intend to initiate a rebuild with the Detroit Red Wings. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the interim general manager emphasized that his priority is to make the best possible decisions for the team. "A rebuild, to me, is out of the question," Horcoff stated firmly. "We have too many good players in that lineup."

This stance reflects the team's recent nearness to a playoff berth, which has given Horcoff confidence in the current roster. "We've been close the last three years in a row. We've been really close," Horcoff noted, highlighting Detroit's proximity to the postseason. The challenge now, according to Horcoff, is finding enough improvement to turn competitive stretches into a completed playoff push.

Horcoff's focus is on forward-looking rather than backward-looking decisions. He is responsible for roster decisions, salary-cap management, and hockey operations personnel. While he has rejected the idea of a rebuild, this does not preclude changes to the roster. The Red Wings can still trade players, develop younger talent, or adjust their spending, all aimed at enhancing the team's competitive outlook.

Horcoff's comments have not determined Dylan Larkin's future, as the situation remains unresolved as of camp. Any decision regarding Larkin, or any other significant contributor, must align with Horcoff's stated direction. Chris Illich, the owner of the Red Wings, has also stated that the next permanent hockey leader will make an independent assessment.
