Make adequate allocation for us in 2027 budget – Rent Commissioner tells Finance Minister

The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has urged the Finance Minister to allocate sufficient budgetary funds for the Rent Control Department in the upcoming 2027 budget. He emphasized that housing and rent control should be considered national priorities, considering the struggles many Ghanaians encounter in securing affordable housing.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Opoku stressed that the government must take deliberate action to ensure the regulatory institutions overseeing the rental sector receive the necessary resources to function effectively. "If the Finance Minister has concern for the citizens, he should allocate resources in the 2027 Budget to address where people will sleep.

We must prioritize housing and rent control, and this should be a conscious effort," he stated. The department faces logistical and operational challenges that hinder its ability to carry out its responsibilities effectively. Opoku appealed for adequate funding, vehicles, and technological equipment to enable the department to operate efficiently.

"We need money, vehicles, and gadgets to work effectively. Rent Control must be treated as an important entity in this country," he added. Strengthening the Rent Control Department, he believes, will enhance the regulation of the rental sector and provide better assistance to tenants and landlords.
