‘How do we run Rent Control with 2 vehicles when others have over 100?’ – Commissioner questions gov’t

Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has expressed concern over the government's allocation of only two vehicles to the Rent Control Department, while other state institutions have been given more than 100 vehicles. According to Opoku, this limited logistics capacity is hindering the department's ability to effectively regulate Ghana's rental sector.

He questioned the reasoning behind what he described as misguided priorities in the distribution of state resources, saying, "How do you run Rent Control with two vehicles while other agencies receive over 100 vehicles? Why do we set our priorities wrong?" Opoku raised these concerns when he first took office and now urges the Finance Minister and other relevant institutions to address the Rent Control Department's challenges.

He emphasized that the department, which deals with a fundamental need for citizens, needs to be properly resourced and treated as a critical state institution. Opoku questioned why an institution responsible for accommodation access continues to face logistical limitations and asked, "Why are we not concerned about where people will sleep?"

He is urging the Finance Ministry and other state institutions to reconsider the resources allocated to the Rent Control Department, specifically its vehicle capacity, to enable the department to operate effectively across the country.
