Leaving political office must not end public service — First Lady

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on ex-Speakers and Deputy Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to continue their public service, warning that leaving political office should not equate to abandoning the nation. At a National Summit of the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria, the First Lady endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, noting that the former legislative leaders' experience and wisdom are still needed in Nigeria.

She urged them to use their influence to strengthen democratic institutions, mentor younger legislators, and preserve institutional memory. The summit's resolutions endorsed President Tinubu's economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, and called on him and state governors to incorporate former presiding officers' experience in government appointments and policy-making.

Former Plateau State Governor and former Speaker Lalong urged Tinubu to complete the economic reforms initiated by his administration, arguing that removing the petrol subsidy was a necessary decision that should be followed by investments in agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, education, energy, and technology.
