Israel and Morocco agree to upgrade diplomatic ties

Israel and Morocco have officially agreed to elevate their diplomatic relations by converting missions to full embassies and appointing ambassadors, as part of a broader effort to strengthen ties forged under the US-led Abraham Accords. This announcement came during a meeting in New York, where Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz discussed the future of their relationship.

The agreement includes expanding direct flights to include Moroccan airlines and pursuing high-level visits. Both nations aim to conclude two economic agreements by the end of 2026, with the process set to commence "soon, God willing." Israeli Foreign Minister Saar emphasized the importance of the relationship and acknowledged the significant contribution from American friends.

The development, following the restoration of diplomatic ties in 2020, marks a notable expansion of Israel's diplomatic and economic engagement with Arab states, which includes Egypt and Jordan. Palestinian leaders expressed concern over the potential implications of the normalization agreements for their longstanding position on Arab statehood.
